Women's Lacrosse Whips Virginia for ACC Championship

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Top-ranked Virginia played outstanding defense and took advantage of its scoring opportunities to defeat second-ranked Virginia 13-5 in the championship game of the 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Championship at Francis E. Henry Stadium.

It was Maryland’s second ACC championship in the three years of the tournament. The Terrapins also won in 1997.

Tournament Most Valuable Player Jen Adams scored three goals and had three assists to lead the Terrapins to their 23rd successive victory over the past two seasons. The last time Maryland lost a game was in the semifinals of the 1998 ACC Tournament to North Carolina. Christie Jenkins was also instrumental to the Terps’ success on Sunday as she netted four goals. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Alex Kahoe made 18 saves for the Terrapins while allowing only five goals. The 18 saves were only three short of Kahoe’s career high for a game.

Adams opened the scoring for the Terps (15-0) when she scored an unassisted goal with 25:40 left in the first half. Just 16 seconds later Virginia tied the game on a fast break goal by Mills Hook, assisted by Jessica Hull. Meredith Egan put the Terrapins up for good in the game with 19:26 left in the first half when she scored on a free position shot. Jenkins’ first goal and Adams’ second goal increased the Maryland lead to 4-1, but back-to-back goals by Jamie Haas pulled the Cavaliers within 4-3 with 8:15 left in the first half. Maryland’s Quinn Carney closed the scoring in the first half for Maryland to increase the Terps’ lead to 5-3.

The second half was virtually all Maryland as the Terps outscored the Wahoos 8-2. Jenkins and Kristin Sommar scored early goals to push the lead to four goals before Uva’s Samm Taylor got the Hoos back with 7-4 with 23:45 to play. But Maryland then scored four goals in a row, including a pair by Allison Comito to put the game away.

Virginia, 12-4, saw a seven-game winning streak stopped by the Terrapins in the game.
