CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia totaled 818.5 points towin the title in the Atlantic Coast Conference women’s swimming and divingchampionship for the second time in school history. Head coach MarkBernardino’s Cavaliers, whose only previous title came in 1990,outdistanced second place North Carolina (728.5) by 90 points at the UVaAquatic and Fitness Center.

Defending-champion Clemson finished in third place with 547 points,followed by Maryland with 391 points. North Carolina State (389), FloridaState (301) and Duke (172) rounded out the scoring.

Virginia had three individuals claim event titles on the last day ofcompetition, in Lindsey Schubert, Emily Carrig and Katie Caratelli.Schubert had the most impressive showing, setting an ACC record in the200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:15.85. Carrig successfully defendedher title in the 200-yard butterfly, swimming a time of 2:01.33, whileCaratelli won the three-meter springboard diving for the second year in arow with a score of 496.5 points. Caratelli was also named the ACC meetmost valuable diver for the second straight season.

The Cavaliers also claimed first place in the 400-yard freestyle relay witha time of 3:20.76. The team of Emily Trakas, Meghan Iffland, Rebecca Cronkand Meghan McCubbins set a new ACC record with their time of 3:20.76.

Two swimmers from second-place North Carolina won event titles for thethird time this week. Chrissy Miller claimed first in the 1650-yardfreestyle, an event which she also won in 1996, with a time of 16:27.16.Miller also won the ACC title in the 500-yard freestyle on Thursday and the400-yard individual medley on Friday. At the conclusion of the day Millerwas named the most valuable swimmer of the meet, an honor which she alsowon in 1996.

The Tar Heels’ Richelle Fox was a first place finisher in the 100-yardfreestyle, setting an ACC meet record with her time of 49.35. Along withthe 100 free, Fox won ACC titles in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yardbutterfly this week, taking first in all three events for the second yearin a row.

The only other event winner on the day was Clemson’s Jennifer Mihalik, whoset an ACC record in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.77
