Women's Tennis Loses to No. 22 VCU

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.– The University of Virginia women’s tennis fell to #22 Virginia Commonwealth 5-4 at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center. The loss snapped the Cavaliers’ four-match winning streak and dropped their record to 8-4 this season.

The Cavaliers held a 3-2 lead with freshman Leslie Cook looking to extend Virginia’s lead. Cook, the hottest player on the team with six consecutive wins, gained a 6-4 win in the first set in her match against Andrea Ondrisova at #4. But Ondrisova bounced back by winning the next two sets by scores of 6-4, 6-3 to knot the score at 3-all heading into doubles play.

Freshman Christie Schweer was among the highlights in singles for Virginia. She defeated Carmen Beitzer 6-2, 7-5 for her fifth win in a row.

Virginia Commonwealth inched closer to victory as Sofia Hiort and Lenka Zacharova defeated Paige Boiko and Kendall White 8-0 at #2. The Cavaliers made things interesting as Cook and fellow rookie Christie Schweer gained an 8-1 win over Beitzer and Siri Thayaprasat at #3 for their sixth win in a row. The Rams clinched the match a short time later as Martina Nedelkova and Andrea Ondrisova defeated Emily Hill and Stacy Gingold 8-2.

The Cavaliers return to action on Saturday (March 28) as they host North Carolina in an ACC battle at 11:00 AM.
