Women's Tennis Pulls Stunning Upset

CORAL GABLES, Fla.– Led by a pair of freshmen, the University of Virginia women’s tennis team held on to defeat 20th-ranked Miami (Fla.) 5-4 this afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on the University of Miami campus.

The teams split the first two singles matches, but the Cavaliers took a commanding lead with wins in the final two singles matches. Junior Paige Boiko outlasted Miami’s Victoria Hunt to gain a 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 win at #1. Freshman Leslie Cook rallied past Miami’s Meredith Laughlin 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 at #5 to put Virginia within one match of the team win.

The Hurricanes made things interesting by evening the score at 4-all with wins at #1 and #2 doubles. In the contest’s decisive match Virginia’s freshman tandem of Cook and Christie Schweer defeated Laughlin and Kristina Bain 8-5 at #3 to complete the upset. Cook and Schweer, ranked 31st in the current national doubles rankings, are the highest ranked freshman doubles team in the country.

The Cavaliers conclude their spring break trip to Florida with a match at Florida International on Saturday (March 14) at 9:00 AM.
