CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia womens and mens tennis teams have each received bids to the 1998 NCAA Tournament.

The bid for the Virginia womens team is its third consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament and the fifth in the last six seasons. The Cavaliers face third-seeded Virginia Commonwealth University on May 15 in the eight-team East Region tournament at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. The match will begin at 1:30 p.m.

The Cavaliers are ranked 35th in the current rankings with a 13-9 record this season. VCU is 18-3 this season and is ranked 24th nationally. VCU downed the Cavaliers 5-4 in the regular season meeting between the two teams.

The winner of the East Region tournament advances to the NCAA Womens Tennis Championships at Notre Dame University on May 21-24.

The Cavalier mens squad received an NCAA Tournament bid for the second year in a row. They are seeded third and will face sixth-seed Florida State at 6:30 p.m. on May 15 at the Thalhimer Tennis Center on the VCU campus in Richmond.

Virginia is ranked 43rd in the current rankings with a 16-7 record. Florida State is 41st currently with a 16-7 record. Virginia defeated the Seminoles 5-2 during the regular season.

The winner of the the Region II tournament advances to the NCAA Mens Tennis Championships at the University of Georgia on May 23-26.
