MALIBU, Calif. – The University of Virginia volleyball team extended its winning streak to six games as the Cavaliers won the 1998 Pepperdine Tournament with a 3-1 victory over UC Irvine at the Firestone Fieldhouse. UVa, coming off wins over Pepperdine and Akron in its first two matches, defeated UC Irvine in four games (15-8, 15-10, 12-15, 15-9).

Andrea Fisher, Jessica Parsons and Mary Frances Scott paced Virginia throughout the tournament. All three players were named to the All-Tournament team. Parsons was selected as tournament MVP. She gathered game-highs in kills (17) and blocks (5) while recording seven digs against the Anteaters. Scott posted game-highs in assists (37) and digs (16) while adding three kills and two blocks and Fischer gathered 15 kills and six digs for Virginia. The trio of Deanna Zwarich (7 kills, 5 digs, 3 blocks), Kristi Winters (5 kills, 10 digs) and Katie Jones (5 kills, 2 digs) contributed in the 3-1 win.

UC Irvine was led by Teri Zartman, who posted 32 assists, 10 digs and three kills in the loss.

With the win, Virginia’s record improves to 8-1 overall, while the loss drops UC Irvine’s record to 2-5. The Cavaliers will return to action on Friday, (Sept 18) when UVa faces VCU in the first game of the Jefferson Cup Invitational. The tournament is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
