MALIBU, Calif. – The University of Virginia volleyball team began play in the 1998 Pepperdine Tournament by defeating host Pepperdine 3-2. The Cavaliers fell behind early after dropping their first game 15-13, before rallying to win three of the last four games (15-13, 15-9, 13-15, 15-8). Virginia then defeated Akron 3-1 in its second game of the tournament. Once again, UVa dropped the first game 15-13, before winning the next three games (15-7, 17-15, 15-9).

In the Pepperdine match, Mary Frances Scott gathered a team-high 72 assists to go along with 15 digs to pace the UVa offense. Andrea Fischer posted a game-high 21 kills to add with 12 digs, and teammate Katie Jones recorded a game-high 26 digs in addition to 17 kills. Jessica Parsons (18 kills, 4 blocks, 2 digs), Claire Folga (12 kills, 7 digs, 2 blocks) and Deanna Zwarich (7 kills, 3 digs, 2 blocks) contributed for Virginia in the 3-2 win.

In the Akron match, Scott dished out game-highs in assists (52) and blocks (eight) to go along with 11 digs and six kills. Fischer posted a game-high 20 kills to add with 13 digs and two blocks, while Parsons posted 17 kills, seven digs and six blocks. Whitney Bilger recorded 12 kills, eight digs and three blocks in the win.

With the pair of victories, Virginia’s record improves to 7-1 overall. The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday, (Sept 12) when UVa faces UC Irvine at 7:00 p.m.
