WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest (11-2, 1-0) swept by conference rival Virginia (11-2, 0-1), 3-0, to win its 1998 Atlantic Coast Conference opener at Reynolds Gym on Friday night. It was the second ACC victory for the Deacons since the program was renewed in 1996. The other victory came against NC State last season.

It was the Deacons defense that dominated the game as they eased past the Cavaliers 15-3, 15-12, 15-3. WFU finished the match with 10 total blocks and 50 digs. Freshman Margaret Davidson led the way with a career-high six block assists. With game two tied at 11, Davidson scored three of the Deacons final four points to win the game by three. Sophomore Julie Cowley and freshman Trina Maso de Moya each registered double-doubles. Cowley had 30 assists and 11 digs, while Maso de Moya had 14 kills to go along with 10 digs.

“It was serving and defense that won the game for us tonight,” said Deacon head coach Mary Buczek.
