CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team will take to the road this weekend, opening with its first conference matches of the season. The Cavaliers will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. on Friday, (Sept. 25) to take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, before heading to Durham, N.C. to face the Duke Blue Devils on Sunday, (Sept. 27).
Virginia enters the conference portion of its schedule on a roll. The Cavaliers have won nine consecutive matches, and stand 11-1 on the season. The 11-1 record marks the best start to a season in the history of the Virginia volleyball program. In 10 of UVa’s 11 wins, the Cavaliers held their opponents to one win or less in a match, including six wins where UVa swept the match. Virginia’s lone loss on the season came at the hands of Minnesota, when the Cavaliers dropped a tough 3-2 decision to the Golden Gophers. Minnesota is currently ranked #24 in the nation in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Poll.
The Cavaliers recently won their second tournament of the season, when UVa claimed the 1998 Jefferson Cup Invitational. Jessica Parsons, Mary Frances Scott and Deanna Zwarich were selected to the All-Tournament team for UVa. Parsons was named the Tournament MVP. Virginia also won the Pepperdine Tournament and finished second in the Navy Trident Classic Tournament earlier this season.
When UVa faces Wake Forest, the Cavaliers won’t be the only team that is on a roll. The Demon Deacons (10-2 overall) have won eight of their last nine matches, including five in a row. Wake Forest is 6-1 at home this season, its lone loss was to Oklahoma when the Demon Deacons dropped a 3-1 decision in the Deacon Invitational.
Duke currently stands at 5-5 overall. The Blue Devils opened the season by winning four of their first five matches. After Duke’s 4-1 start, the Blue Devils dropped four of their last five matches, including their last three matches. Duke stands at 2-1 at home this season. The Blue devils will face Maryland (Sept. 25) before facing Virginia.
