State College, Pa.- The Cavalier wrestling team took a handful of wrestlers to State College, Pa., this Sunday to compete in the Penn State Open. The Cavaliers wrestled as individuals, so no team score was kept.

Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) represented the Cavaliers at 125, going 0-1 on the weekend. Virginia had more luck at 133, as three of the four wrestlers won their first two matches. Jason Bernd (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) finished at 2-2, including a pin in his first match. Steve Garland (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) went 2-1, taking two major decisions in his first two bouts. Toby MacDonald (Venice, Fla./Venice) also went 2-2 winning by major decision in the second round. David Takseraas (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) was shutout in the tournament, going 0-1.

John Christopher (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) and Matt Ounsworth (Philadelphia, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) also competed for Virginia, both wrestling in the 149 class. Both Christopher and Ounsworth fell in the first round. Cartney Curnuck (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) also fell in the first round, losing 3-0 in the 157 pound bracket.

In the upper weights, Jimi Massey (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) fell in the first round of the 174-pound bracket, as did Ryan McGrath (Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) in the 184-pound class. Jeremy Wilkins (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) fell in the second round to nationally-ranked Bandele Adenyi-Ba of Pennsylvania before succumbing in the first round of consolations.
