University of Virginia golfer James Driscoll reached the quarterfinals of the recent United States Men’s Amateur Championship in Pebble Beach, Calif.

Driscoll lost to eventual champion David Gossett 4 and 3 in the quarterfinals of the match play competition on August 20. Gossett never missed a fairway and did not have a bogey until the 13th hole of the match.

“It’s kind of intimidating to see your opponent stripe it down the middle of the fairway on every hole,” Driscoll said.

Driscoll, from Chestnut Hill, Mass., defeated Jeff Keck of Martinez, Ga., 2 and 1 in the first round of match play, beat Scott Lander of Kingman, Ariz., 1-up in the second round, and defeated Michael Kirk of South Africa 3 and 2 in the third round to reach the quarterfinals.

Driscoll qualified for match play after a two-round total of 148 in the stroke play portion of the tournament. He will be a senior at Virginia during the 1999-2000 academic year.
