SYDNEY, Australia – Shamek Pietucha (Edmonton, Alberta/Louis St.Laurent), a 1999 graduate of the University of Virginia, advanced to thesemifinals of the 100-meter butterfly at the Pan Pacific SwimmingChampionships in Sydney, Australia, on August 27, with a time of 55.40second. Representing Canada, Pietucha finished 15th overall, but failed toadvance to the finals after finishing eighth in the finals of the 200butterfly earlier in the week. The Pan Pacific Championships, the premiereswimming competition in the world this year, are being held at the 2000Olympic venue in Sydney.

Pietucha posted a time of 54.56, the tenth best time, in themorning heats. He turned in a time of 55.40 to finish 15th in thesemifinals in the afternoon session. On August 25, at the Pan PacificChampionships, Pietucha placed eighth in the finals of the 200-meterbutterfly with a time 2:00.00.

At the 1999 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg, Canada, earlier this summer,Pietucha captured a gold medal in the 200-meter butterfly and a silvermedal in the 100-meter butterfly. He posted a time of 1:59.10 to win the200 and his time of 53.40 was just .07 seconds behind the gold medalwinning time in the 100 fly.

Pietucha, a nine-time All-American, won the 200-yard butterfly atthe 1999 NCAA Championships with a school and Atlantic CoastConference-record time of 1:43.50. He finished 13th in the 100-yardbackstroke (48.42 seconds) at the NCAA Meet. Pietucha won the 100-yardbutterfly (47.59 seconds) and the 100-yard backstroke (48.67 seconds) atthe 1999 ACC Championships.
