WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Cavalier defense held the Terrapins, the nation’s highest scoring team, off the scoreboard in the first half but it was not enough as the Terrapins scored twice in the second half to defeat the Cavaliers 2-0 tonight in the ACC Semifinals.

After a first half which saw the Cavaliers turn back eight Maryland corners, the Terrapins finally broke through the wall as Caroline Walter stuck in a rebound at the 27:24 mark of the second period. The Terrapins connected again as Walter drove the endline and dished to Tagliente who poked the ball in the net at the 18:35 point of the second half.

Cavalier keeper Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, PA/Methacton) made six saves on the day while holding Maryland to their lowest scoring output of the season.

Virginia now awaits a bid to the 1999 NCAA Tournament which will be extended on Wednesday, Nov. 10.
