Virginia Routs Elon In Season Opener, 97-66

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) – Donald Hand scored 18 points and Chris Williamsadded 16 points and nine rebounds Friday night as Virginia opened its seasonwith a 97-66 victory against Elon.
Freshman Travis Watson added 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Cavaliers(1-0), with classmates Roger Mason and Magestic Mapp scoring 10 points apiece.The three are part of one of the most highly regarded recruiting classes in thecountry.
Elon (0-1) was paced by Brendon Rowell with 10 points.
The Cavaliers, who finished 14-16 and last in the Atlantic Coast Conferencea year ago, led 50-30 at halftime and won going away, allowing second-year headcoach Pete Gillen to use 15 players, 10 of whom scored. The Cavaliers alsooutrebounded Elon 54-39 and scored 40 points off the Fightin’ Christians’ 25turnovers.
