ROCK HILL, S.C. – The University of Virginia softball gathered two wins at the Ringor/Winthrop Invitational in convincing fashion. After opening play in the tournament with a 2-0 shutout of Wichita State, Virginia defeated UNC-Wilmington 13-1, before dropping Dayton by a score of 6-1. The Cavaliers have outscored their opponents 21-2 in the tournament thus far.

Chrisy Quinn started on the mound for Virginia against UNC-Wilmington and recorded eight strikeouts to go along with her one-hit performance. The Cavalier offense posted 11 hits on the afternoon led by Beth Crimi (3-4, 2 runs) and Meaghan Young (2-3, 5 RBI, triple). Amy Peay (1-2, 2 RBI, 2 runs) and Quinn (1-2, 2 RBI, 2 runs) came up big for UVa as did Lori Reese (1-3, RBI, run), Stacy Holmes (1-3, RBI, run), Mariruth Graham (1-2 run) and Corinne Good (1-3, 2 RBI) who each added hits in the win.

Stacey Zagol took the mound against Dayton, recording 12 strikeouts while scattering four hits in her outing. The Cavaliers kept the bats moving in their nightcap, collecting 10 hits on the evening led by Karen Breshears (2-4, 3 RBI, double, run) and Graham (2-3, RBI). Reese (1-3, RBI) and Crimi (2-4, RBI, run) helped provide insurance for Virginia. Kelly McCabe (1-3), Holmes (1-4, run) and Young (1-4) added hits in the victory.

The wins improve Virginia’s record to (16-14) overall. The Cavaliers are scheduled to play Princeton (TBA) to round out Virginia’s field in the tournament. UVa will then travel to Lynchburg, Va. to face the Liberty Flames in a doubleheader on Tuesday, (Mar. 24). The first game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
