Wrestling Finishes Third At VSIWC

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Virginia wrestling teamcompleted competition in the 2000 Virginia State Intercollegiate WrestlingChampionships (VSIWC). The competition featured seven schools from thestate of Virginia which competed in tournament action. The Cavaliersfinished third with 87.5 points, behind VSIWC Champion Virginia Tech (106points) and second place finisher James Madison (91 points).

Steve Garland (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown), Ryan McGrath(Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) and John Pozniak (State College, Pa./StateCollege) ran the tables in their respective weight classes as the tripgathered the weight class titles at 125, 184 and 149, respectively forVirginia.

At 125, Garland topped J. Clark of George Mason with a 17-2technical fall, C. Combs of James Madison with a fall at 3:43 and L.Spellman of VMI with a 20-4 technical fall win to advance to the 1256Championship. Garland then defeated M. Akers of Virginia Tech by the countof 9-2 to claim the 125 title.

In the 184 lbs class, McGrath topped M. Weaver of Virginia Techwith a 12-1 major decision victory and C. Harrington of Old Dominion by thescore of 9-2 before pinning Virginia Tech’s S. Justus at 4:57 to claim the184 title.

At 149, Pozniak recorded a fall at 1:28 over VMI’s B. Bentley andbeat A. Austin of GMU with a 25-8 technical fall and before defeating A.Britt of VMI by the score of 6-4 to win the 149 title.

P.J. Bory (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) recorded a second place finish inthe 141 lbs class, while teammates Don Carlo-Clauss (Rochester, N.Y./GreeceOlympia) and Ryan Painter (Rainelle, V.W./Rainelle) gathered third placefinishes in the tournament after claiming victories in the consolationbrackets of the 157 lbs class and HWT class, respectively.

Virginia will return to action on Friday, January 28th when theCavaliers travel to Durham, N.C. to face the Duke Blue Devils in an ACCdual contest scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Following its dual with Duke, UVawill head to Raleigh, N.C. to face the North Carolina State Wolfpack inanother conference dual. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
