CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – University of Virginia fourth years Amy Fromal(Folsom, Pa./Ridley) and Ashley Widger (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) were bothnamed to the Preseason LaxPower All-American first team today, and StephySamaras (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) was named an Honorable Mention selectionas well.

Primarily a defensive wing, Fromal was a key ingredient to thedefensive success as she was first on the team in ground balls with 98 andis third in caused turnovers with 36. Her 11 assists ranks 10th all-timeat Virginia for assists as a junior. Her 13 goals and 11 assists were bothcareer highs, coming in a season where she was counted on to anchor thedefense for the Cavaliers. Fromal also had one game-winning goal on theseason and had the game-winning goal against Duke in the NCAA semifinals. Afirst-team IWLCA All-American in 1999, Fromal also ranked sixth on the teamin scoring in 1999.

Ashley Widger celebrated her insertion into the starting lineup bybeing a stalwart in the defense. She ranked second in caused turnovers andground balls. Ashley was instrumental in starting many a fast break whichled to a Virginia score. Widger was named the team MVP in 1999 and was alsothe recipient of the Betty and Money Yates Award, which recognizes theVirginia Lacrosse Players whose standards of excellence and play epitomizethe ideal of Virginia Lacrosse. Widger was a first-team IWLCA and USLAll-American in 1999.

Samaras was a third-team IWLCA All-American in 1999. She led theCavaliers in caused turnovers with 50 and ranked fourth in ground ballpickups with 57 and will be expected to anchor the vaunted Cavalier defense.
