STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The University of Virginia’s Rob Pearce (Springfield,Va./Robert E. Lee) took runner-up honors in the 1000-meter run by less thana tenth of a second at the National Invitational Indoor Meet held today atPenn State University. His time of 2:26.49 was just edged by JamesMadison’s Ian Scott who came in at 2:26.40. The women’s distance medleyteam of Jeanna Composti (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem), Jessica Thomas (Pt.Pleasant, N.J./Pt. Pleasant Bourough), Sarah Folse (Fredericksburg,Va./Chancellor) and Megan Schwartz (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) finishedin third place in a time of 11:55.66.

Elise Mitchell (Narvon, Pa./Garden Spot) competed in both the 20#weight throw, tossing a 15.67m (51′ 5 1/4″) which was good enough forfourth place, and the shot put, in which she threw 11.11m (36′ 5 1/2″). Herteammate Hilary Wilson (East Claridon, Ohio/Hawken) also competed in theweight and took 10th with a toss of 13.91m (45′ 8″). Curtrell Frye(Columbia, S.C./Irmo) took seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 11.65m(38′ 2 3/4″) and 10th in the long jump with 5.49m (18′ 1/4″). She also rana 9.19 in the 60-meter hurdles.

The pole vault contingent took three of the top nine slots asVictoria Osipenko (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) cleared 3.36m (11′ 1/4″) forsixth position and Annica White (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) and JacquelineChmar (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) both hit 3.20m (10′ 6″) in a tiefor ninth. Kiamesha Otey (Quinton, Va./New Kent) ran a 7.76 in thepreliminaries to advance to the finals of the 60-meter dash where she tookseventh in a time of 7.80. Carrielle Doe (Reston, Va./South Lakes) ran a7.98 in the preliminaries as well. The women’s 1600-meter relay took sixthoverall with a time of 3:55.13.

On the men’s side, Matt Antunes (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) finishedjust two seconds behind Pearce to take sixth in the 1000-meter run at2:28.71. The distance medley squad of Pearce, Antunes, Steve Gross (PortMatilda, Pa./State College) and Justin Wood (Nevada City, Calif./ NevadaUnion) took 10th in a time of 10:01.20. Marion Mason (Ft. Belvoir,Va./Hayfield) and Jarrett Hagwood (Martinsville, Va./Laurel) took 6th and8th in the 60m hurdle finals, respectively, duplicating their finish fromlast week. Mason ran 8.15 in the preliminaries before an 8.23 in thefinals, and Hagwood ran 8.18 before taking 8th with 8.27. Cory Chandler(Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) also ran in the event, finishing with a8.32. Mason also took seventh in the long jump with a leap of 6.90m (22′ 73/4″). Bill Johnston (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) took fourth in the35# weight with a toss of 16.80m (55′ 1 1/2″).
