CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The University of Virginia women’s tennis teamopened the dual match portion of its spring eseason with a 6-3 victory overPennsylvania on Sunday afternoon, January 30 at the Boar’s Head SportsClub. With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 4-1 in dual match play in the1999-2000 season.

Virginia won four of six singles matches to take a 4-2 lead enteringdoubles play. The ‘Hoos then won two of three doubles matches for the 6-3triumph.

In singles play, the Cavaliers received wins from third-years ChristieSchweer (Houston, Texas/Memorial) and Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach, Fla./LakeWorth Christian), second-year Christine Kim (McLean, Va./Bishop Ireton) andfirst-year Henriette Williams (Millburn, N.J./Millburn). Schweer defeatedAnastasia Pozdniakova 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 at #2 singles, while Kim won instraight-sets, 7-6, 6-4, over Elana Gold at #6 singles. At #3 singles,Williams posted a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over ShubhaSrinivasan. Cook rounded out the Cavaliers’ singles winners with a 6-3,6-0 win at #4 singles over Rochelle Raiss.

UVa second-year Amy O’Donnell (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) lost at #1 singles toLenka Beranova 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Third-year Kelly Weaver (Kingston,N.Y./Kingston) dropped a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 match to Penn’s Louani Bascara inthe fifth singles slot.

In the doubles competition, the Virginia duo of Cook and Schweer, ranked49th in the nation, posted an 8-5 win over Raiss and Beranova at #1doubles. The Cavaliers also received a victory at #3 doubles as the tandemof Williams and Weaver beat Penn’s Bascara and Pozdniakova 8-5. TheQuakers’ lone doubles triumph came at #2 as Gold and Carla Dorsey defeatedVirginia’s O’Donnell and Kim 9-7.

Virginia returns to action on Saturday, February 5 when it travels toNorfolk, Va., for a 3:00 p.m. math against Old Dominion.
