Virginia’s Top Softball Clinic sessions have been planned to improve basicfundamental skills and knowledge of the game for players 5th grade through12th grade. Sessions will include Pitching, Catching, Fielding, Hitting,Base running, and Bunting.

Clinic Objective

• To improve basic softball skills
• Group instructions based upon skill and age level
• To improve individual instructions at a ratio of 10 to 1
• Identification and correction of individual skills
• Enhancement of the individual’s knowledge and understanding of softball

Location/Directions
The University of Virginia is located in Charlottesville, in centralVirginia. All softball activities will be held at The Park. Directionswill be sent with the confirmation.

Who is Eligible
The camp is designed for girls ages 11-18. Players eligible to attendcollege in the fall of 2000 are eligible to attend camp.

What to Bring
Campers should bring blankets, sheets, a pillow, towels, toiletries, alarmclock, plus practice equipment – tennis shoes, cleats, glove, socks,shorts, t-shirts, and sweat clothing. Catchers must provide a mask, chestprotector and leg guards. Campers are asked to bring their own battinggloves, sliding and/or kneepads, bat, helmet, and glove.

Housing and Food
All resident campers will be housed at McCormick Hall. Each room is adouble. Campers who wish to lodge with a particular person may specify thename on the application. The hall will be supervised at all times by campstaff living in the hall.

Meals are planned and supervised by experienced food service personnel andare served cafeteria style in the University dining halls.

July 16: 7-10 p.m.
July 17: 7:30-8:30 a.m. *Commuters Only*

Check-out
July 20: 4:30-6:00 p.m.

Insurance and Medical Care
A member of the UVA Athletic Training Staff will be in attendance or oncall for all sessions to handle any injuries that may occur. You must maila photocopy of the camper/parent’s insurance card and proof of physical(photocopy of the physical will do). The physical must have been withinone year of the date of camp. The insurance card and proof of physicalmust be included with the registration form or it will not be accepted.

Rules and Regulations
Campers must abide by the Rules and Regulations of Virginia’s Top SoftballClinic. Campers are required to attend all sessions and activities. Anyserious violations, damage to Virginia’s Top Softball Camp property, orother behavior deemed detrimental to the group will result in immediatedismissal. There will be no refund of fees upon expulsion or uponvoluntary withdrawal from the camp.

Cost
The resident fee for the general skills, pitching catching, and hittingcamp includes instruction by top collegiate coaching staff, housing, food,athletic training services, and awards. The commuter camp fee includes allthe previous features, with exception of overnight lodging and breakfast.

Overnight Camp – $360
*4 nights / 4 days of instruction
*All meals

Commuter Camp – $290
*4 days of instruction
*Lunch and dinner included

Refunds
Campers who must leave during the camp due to illness or injury willreceive a pro-rated refund based on the number of days of instruction. Norefunds will be given to campers who voluntarily leave camp or who are senthome for disciplinary reasons.

INSTRUCTIONAL STAFF

Head Softball Coach Cheryl Sprangel

Cheryl Sprangel is in her third season at the helm of the University ofVirginia Softball Program. In her first two seasons at UVa, she has guidedthe Cavaliers to a 73-54 record. By guiding the team to 38 wins in 1998,Sprangel set a record for most wins in a season by a first year coach atVirginia. Furthermore, with 38 wins the ‘Hoos garnered the second highestwin total in the program’s 19-year history and the most wins in a seasonsince 1989. In 1999, UVa reached the finals of the Atlantic CoastConference (ACC) Tournament for the second consecutive year. Before comingVirginia, Sprangel was the Head Women’s Softball Coach at the University ofToledo for 14 seasons. While at Toledo, Sprangel led the Rockets to threeMid-American Conference titles and a Women’s College World Series berth in1989. She is 539-409-1 as a head coach.

Assistant Softball Coach Jamie Pinkerton

Jamie Pinkerton is in his second season as an assistant softball coach atthe University of Virginia. Previously, Pinkerton held an assistant coachposition at Northeast Louisiana in 1997. Prior to NLU, Pinkerton coachedat the University of Tulsa for three seasons (1994-97). Pinkerton has alsocoached one season at the high school level. He helped leadClaremone-Sequoyah (OK) to a Will Rogers Conference Championship, aDistrict title, and to Oklahoma’s Class 2A State Runners-up. Pinkerton hasalso coached on the ASA level, coaching the Oklahoma Mustangs from1986-1994. During that time span Pinkerton led the Mustangs to several ASANationals.
