University of Virginia second year Katie Slocum (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) tipped in the Cavaliers’ first goal of the game to tie the contest late in the first half, but it was not enough as the Nittany Lions scored a pair in the second half to defeat Virginia 3-1 today in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. The loss was the first of the year for Virginia.

Penn State got on the board first as Irene Kofroth converted a penalty stroke at the 20:26 mark of the first half. Virginia held its ground for the next 13 minutes before forcing a corner with just under eight minutes remaining in the half. Slocum tipped in the direct shot by Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) to even the score. Just two minutes later Penn State was awarded a second stroke but Kofroth’s attempt went wide, and the teams went to the break knotted at one.

Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton) was stellar in the cage as she stopped five shots in 64 minutes of play. Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) recorded her first collegiate minutes and finished with two saves and no goals allowed.

The Cavaliers return to action tomorrow to face the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Buckeyes are coached by former Virginia All-American Merideth Thorpe.
