Virginia’s Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton) made 17 saves against Old Dominion today, but the #2 Monarchs put five in the cage to defeat Virginia 5-1. Lorraine Vizzuso’s (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) tally in the second half off a corner was the first goal allowed by the Monarchs in six games.

Old Dominion struck early as Marina DiGiacomo converted a penalty stroke 6:12 into the game. The Monarchs got thre more goals in the first half, including another penalty stroke with just over five minutes remaining in the half, to take a 4-0 lead at the break.

Virginia scored its lone goal as Vizzuso chipped in a rebound off a corner shot, ending the Monarch’s five-game shutout streak at the 16:15 mark of the second half. But Old Dominion held tough after that, netting one more goal with 8:46 to play as they converted a third penalty stroke for the final score of 5-1.

Virginia returns home for a three-game homestand, starting on Wednesday as the Tribe of William and Mary comes to Charlottesville. The Cavaliers host the Tribe at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, Sept. 27.
