CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer team played its fourth overtime game in its last six contests, as Virginia and Fairfield played to a 2-2 tie in front of 1,415 spectators at Kl?ckner Stadium.

UVa’s Ryan Gibbs (West Chester, Pa./East) gave the Cavaliers and early 1-0 lead when he scored Virginia’s first goal at 11:01. Chad Prince (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) sent a pass upfield to Marshall Leonard (Midland, Ga./Shaw), who then sent a cross to Gibbs in front of the Fairfield goal. Gibbs headed the ball off the right post of the goal, and the ball deflected into the net to give UVa a 1-0 lead. Just over five and a half minutes later, Virginia extended its lead to 2-0 when Kyle Martino (Westport, Conn./Staples) sent a cross to Gibbs, who then touch-passes the ball to Steve Totten (Allentown, N.J./Peddie). Totten fired a shot from 12 yards out and scored his third goal of the year at 16:40 to make it a 2-0 UVa lead.

Fairfield came up with a huge score right before the end of the first half of play to pull within one goal of Virginia. With just under one minute on the clock, Rob DeFaveri gathered a pass from teammate David Mancini, ran through the Virginia defense and beat UVa goalkeeper David Comfort (Richmond, Va,/Monacan) for the Stags first goal of the game at 44:07 to make it a 2-1 contest.

Both teams played through 41 and a half minutes of a scoreless second period and it appeared the Virginia was going to hold on for a 2-1 victory before Fairfield capitalized on a scoring opportunity. FU’s Bryan Harkin sent a direct kick to Aaron Kingi, who headed the kick into the UVa goal at the 86:39 mark to tie the game at 2-2. The game was sent to overtime, where neither team able to score the game-winning goal.
