CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Virginia women’s tennis team had three singles players and three doubles teams advance to the second round of play at the Carolina Classic Friday (October 6). Second-year Jennifer Tuchband (Millburn, N.J. / Millburn) and fourth-year Kelly Weaver (Kingston, N.Y. / Kingston) highlighted the Cavaliers’ day, winning two consecutive matches to advance to the finals of the “B” flight doubles competition.

Weaver and Tuchband won by default over UNC Greensboro’s Adamson and Peel in the first round, before beating Koenig and Zalinski from UNC 9-7 in the semifinals. The `Hoos’ two “A” flight doubles teams also won their first-round matches, but both failed to advance past the second round. First-year Laura James (Fairfax, Va. / Centerville) and her partner, third-year Christine Kim (McLean, Va. / Bishop Ireton), cruised to an 8-3 win in their first match of the day against Richmond’s Bagnato and Kenoyer, before falling 8-4 in the second round contest to the Tarheels’ Bairos and Neibling. Meanwhile, Christie Schweer (Houston, Texas / Memorial) and Henriette Williams (Raleigh, N.C. / Broughton) posted an 8-2 win over UNC Greensboro’s Cherry and Kannan in their first match of the tournament, but could not get past Duke’s Johnson and Miller, falling 8-4 in the second round.

In the singles side of the draw, Virginia was paced by Williams, Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach, Fla. / Lake Worth Christian), and James. Williams defeated Laurence Poujoulat of Campbell 6-4, 6-1 in her “A” flight match, while Cook also had an easy time, advancing in straight-sets against Carlin Kannan of UNC Greensboro in the “B” flight competition, 6-1, 6-1. James, on the other hand, had to go to three sets in her first round “B” flight contest, eventually prevailing, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Schweer, Tuchband, Kim and Weaver did not fare as well in singles as they did in doubles. In “C” flight singles, Weaver fell in the first round to Virginia Commonwealth’s Anla Dumitrescu, 7-6, 1-6, 6-1, while Kim lost to the Tarheels’ Courtney Zalinski, 6-3, 6-1.

In “A” singles, Tuchband lost to Amanda Johnson from Duke, 6-1, 6-1, and Schweer lost to UNC’s Julie Rotundi, 6-3, 6-2.

The Carolina Classic continues tomorrow at 8:30 am and concludes with the finals on Sunday, October 8.-UVa-
