COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Virginia volleyball team lost to Maryland 3-1 (15-3, 17-15, 14-16, 15-12) Friday night (October 13) at Ritchie Coliseum despite a match-high 25 kills from fourth-year middle Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North). With the loss, the Cavaliers fall below .500 overall at 9-10 and drop to 4-4 in the ACC. Maryland improves to 11-8 overall and 3-5 in the conference.

Zwarich hit an impressive .429 in the match with 25 kills (6.25 per game) and just four errors in 49 attempts. She also added a match-high five blocks, including four solo stuffs, and four digs. Third-year utility player Jenny Harmon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem), who registered a triple-double in her last match, notched 12 kills. First-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) recorded her seventh-consecutive double-double with 12 kills and 19 digs. First-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) posted 50 assists and nine digs in the match.

Sophomore outside hitter Carey Brennan’s 23 kills and 19 digs led Maryland. Senior outside hitter Nnenna Amobi posted 11 kills and four service aces, while sophomore setter Lindsay Davey contributed 48 assists and 16 digs to the Terrapin victory.

The Cavaliers lost the first game 15-3 and then dropped a tough 17-15 decision in the second game. The `Hoos battled back to cut the deficit to 2-1 with a 16-14 victory in game three. The Terrapins pulled out the match with a close 15-12 win in the fourth game.

The Cavaliers return to action on Tuesday, October 17 when they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. for a 7:00 p.m. ACC match against North Carolina.
