Virginia's Vahaly Falls in Quarterfinals of ITA All-American

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -University of Virginia fourth-year men’s tennis player Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) lost his quarterfinal match at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men’s All-American Championships Saturday (October 14). Vahaly, the tournament’s top seed, fell, 6-3, 6-3, to unseeded JP Fruttero of California. The loss ended Vahaly’s bid to advance to the finals of his second consecutive ITA Grand Slam event. He lost in the singles final of the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships last month.
Vahaly was also unable to duplicate his doubles performance at the T. Rowe Price National Clay Courts. He and partner Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) lost in the ITA All-American quarterfinals to unseeded Georges Matijasevic and Tiago Ruffoni from Auburn, 6-3, 6-3. Vahaly and Montgomery were the tournament’s seventh-seeded doubles team.
