PRINCETON, N.J. – The University of Virginia women’s tennis team captured the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I Invitational Tennis Championship Sunday (October 15) in Princeton, N.J., with a 4-3 victory over Penn.

The Cavaliers win was due in large part to the play of two doubles teams. Fourth-year Christie Schweer (Houston, Texas / Memorial) and second-year Henriette Williams (Raleigh, N.C. / Broughton) defeated Rochelle Raiss and Sanela Kunovac in #1 doubles, 8-5., and fourth-year Kelly Weaver (Kingston, N.Y. / Kingston), and her partner , second-year Jennifer Tuchband (Millburn, N.J. / Millburn), bested Louani Bascara and Shubha Srinivasan, 8-4. Those two doubles victories gave Virginia the lone doubles point, which turned out to be the match-clinching point for the `Hoos. They went on to win three of six singles matches to cement the 4-3 victory.

Williams, Weaver, and first-year Laura James (Fairfax, Va. / Centerville) all won their singles matches for UVa. James played at #4 singles for each of Virginia’s four dual matches, winning four consecutive matches in her first collegiate dual match tournament.
