Virginia Volleyball Rallies For 3-2 Win Over North Carolina State

The Virginia volleyball team lost the first two games of its match against North Carolina State, but rallied to win the final three games for a 3-2 (7-15, 15-17, 15-11, 15-8, 16-14) come-from-behind victory over the Wolfpack in ACC volleyball action Friday evening (October 20) at Reynolds Coliseum. UVa’s snapped a two-match losing streak with the victory and improve to 10-11 overall and 5-5 in the ACC. NC State falls to 7-15 overall and 1-9 in the conference with the loss.
In the deciding fifth game, the Cavaliers overcame consecutive match points to conclude a come-from-behind victory over NC State. The Wolfpack jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the fifth and deciding game, appeared to withstand a Virginia rally and took a 14-12 lead. The `Hoos won both match points to knot the game at 14-14, and then won the match by taking the final two points of the game.
Fourth-year middle Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) led the Cavaliers with 23 kills and six block assists. With the six blocks, Zwarich increased her season total to 98 and needs just two more blocks to become the first Virginia volleyball player to register 100 or more blocks in each of her four collegiate seasons. First-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) notched her ninth-consecutive double-double and team-leading 15th of the season with 15 kills and 21 digs. First-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) added 46 assists, 12 digs and three block assists, while first-year outside hitter Whitney Ashcraft (Yorktown, Ind./Burris) tallied 14 digs and three service aces.
Junior outside hitter Charece Williams paced NC State with a season-high 30 kills, three service aces and 18 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Rebecca Anderson added 18 kills, while senior middle blocker Stephanie Stambaugh had 11 kills, 10 digs and seven block assists.
The Cavaliers return to action on Saturday, October 21 when they travel to Blacksburg, Va. for a 7:00 p.m. match at Virginia Tech.
