Oct. 25, 2000
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer team coasted to a 4-1 victory over the American Eagles in front of 908 spectators at Kl?ckner Stadium. UVa forward Ryan Gibbs (West Chester, Pa./East) scored two goals (including the game-winner) and added an assist as Virginia won its 11th game of the season.
The Cavaliers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Alecko Eskandarian (Montvale, N.J./Bergen Catholic) gathered a touch pass from Gibbs and beat American goalkeeper Michael Behonick from 13 yards out at 30:17 for the games first goal. UVa would add to its lead just over 11 minutes later at 41:53 when Jonathan Cole (Annapolis, Md./McDonogh) sent a long pass across the field to a streaking Gibbs. Gibbs fielded the pass, then beat Behonick for another goal to make it a 2-0 Virginia lead. UVa would take its two-goal lead into halftime.
American came to life offensively in the beginning of the second period and the Eagles cut the Cavaliers lead to 2-1 when Kris Bertsch headed in a cross from teammate Brett Colton at 51:34. However, UVa responded with two more goals of its own to pull away for the 4-1 victory. Gibbs scored his second goal of the match at 59:54 when he gathered a deflected ball in front of an open AU goal and connected on an uncontested shot to make it 3-1 in favor of Virginia. Kyle Martino (Westport, Conn./Staples) scored UVa’s final goal of the contest at 66:37 on a penalty kick after Eskandarian was tackled in the box by American’s Behonick.
