Field Hockey Defeats Duke 3-2 in Overtime

Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) converted a penalty corner five minutes into overtime, sending the Cavaliers (11-6) to a 3-2 win over the Duke Blue Devils (6-11) today in Durham. Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) collected the stick stop and pushed the ball over to Goodloe who fired the ball in the right side of the boards for the sudden-victory win.

The Cavaliers took the early lead in the game as Coleman scored on a corner halfway through the first half. Goodloe and Julia Richardson (Atlanta, Ga./Stone Ridge) were credited with assists on the play. Virginia went up 2-0 with five minutes to play in the first half as Katie Jo Gerfen (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) collected a pass across the mouth of the cage from Lorraine Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) and stuck it in the net, sending the Hoos to a 2-0 lead at the break.

Duke came out strong in the second half, scoring six minutes into the period as Liz Bateman tipped a pass from Angie North into the net to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Blue Devils tied the game as Robin Merritt converted a penalty stroke to the top shelf six minutes later.

Thirty seconds into the overtime period, Vizzuso drove to the endline and sent ball along the goal line but the Hoos could not put the ball in the cage. A couple minutes later the Blue Devils were awarded a corner but they could not convert. Virginia was awarded a corner, setting the stage for Goodloe’s heroics.

Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton) made five saves in the game. The Cavaliers will close out the regular season with a game against Yale tomorrow, October 28 in Durham. Game time against the Elis is 2:00.
