CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer team recorded its third shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory over the Providence Friars in front of 1,371 spectators at Kl?ckner Stadium. Steve Totten (Allentown, N.J./Peddie) and Alecko Eskandarian (Montvale, N.J./Peddie) scored goals for UVa, while Cavalier goalkeeper David Comfort (Richmond, Va./Monacan) gathered two saves to preserve the shutout victory.

Virginia didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard first, as the Cavaliers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just 1:20 into the match. Marshall Leonard (Midland, Ga./Shaw) sent a cross from the left corner of the field to Totten, who fielded the pass and chipped-in a shot from eight yards out to give Virginia a 1-0 lead. Totten’s goal was the eventual game-winner. The Cavaliers took their one-goal lead into the locker room at halftime.

Just under 18 minutes into the second half of play, Virginia extended its lead to 2-0 when Eskandarian gathered a cross sent by teammate Jacob LeBlanc (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto), and beat Providence goalkeeper Danny Glynn with a 12-yard shot at the 62:50 mark of the match. The Cavalier defense limited the Friar offense to just three shots for the entire game (including one in the second half), and held on for the 2-0 shutout victory. UVa outshot Providence 18-3 in the contest.

With the win, Virginia improves to 12-4-1 overall, while the loss drops Providence’s record to 4-12-1 on the season. This was the first meeting between the two schools.
