GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Virginia men’s basketball team is picked to finish fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season by media representatives attending the ACC’s annual Operation Basketball event on Sunday (Oct. 29).

The media representatives selected Duke to finish first followed by Maryland, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Virginia, North Carolina State, Clemson, Georgia Tech and Florida State.

Four publications have ranked UVa among the top 30 teams in the nation in preseason rankings. Virginia is ranked 18th by The Sporting News, 23rd by Basketball News, 24th by Street & Smith’s and 27th by the Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook.

Virginia returns four starters from last season’s team that finished with an overall record of 19-12, tied for third in the ACC with a 9-7 conference record and participated in the National Invitation Tournament. The Cavaliers were picked to finish seventh at last year’s ACC Operation Basketball event prior to the start of the 1999-00 season.

The Cavaliers have two exhibition games scheduled at University Hall during the 2000-01 preseason practice period. UVa plays the London Leopards on Saturday (Nov. 4, 2:00 p.m.) and the Nantucket Nectars on November 12 (1:00 p.m.).

Virginia opens its 2000-01 regular-season schedule against Long Island University at University Hall on November 17 (7:30 p.m.).
