Thweatt Named ACC Defensive Back of the Week

Charlottesville, Va. – Outside linebacker Byron Thweatt was named Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Back of the Week for his play in leading Virginia to a 17-6 win over conference rival North Carolina on Saturday.

The senior co-captain from Chesterfield, Va., led an outstanding defensive effort in the Cavaliers’ best defensive effort of the season.

He was in on a career-high 19 tackles, including 11 solo stops, the most by a Cavalier defensive player in two years. Thweatt also dropped quarterback Ronald Curry for a 12-yard sack, his second sack of the season.

Virginia held the Tar Heels to just two field goals, marking the first time in 28 games that the opposition failed to score a touchdown. North Carolina averaged just 3.2 yards per rush and didn’t have a play of more than 27 yards in the game.

The team’s leading tackler with an average of 10.8 tackles per game, Thweatt is seventh in school history with 348 career tackles. He has started every game of his career and is just the fifth linebacker to be a four-year starter since freshman eligibility was restored in 1972.
