Virginia Wrestling Defeats Binghamton, 26-13

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia wrestling team defeated the Binghamton Bearcats by the score of 26-13 in UVa’s home-opening dual match at Memorial Gymnasium. After losing the first bout of the evening, the Cavaliers won six consecutive matches en route to claiming their second dual match victory of the season.
Binghamton jumped out to an early 3-0 lead when Dmitry Lisenenkov earned a 9-8 win over Virginia’s Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) in the heavyweight match. However, the Cavaliers would claim the next six matches beginning with Ryan Stewart’s (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) 5-4 victory over the Bearcats’ Patrick Griffin at 125 lbs. UVa’s Joe Alexander (Franklin, N.J./Delsea Regional) came away with a 7-5 decision over Andy Loux at 133 lbs. to put Virginia ahead 6-3 before the Cavaliers’ Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) pinned Binghamton’s Travis Granger at 1:06 in the 141 lbs. match to give Virginia a 12-3 lead.
UVa posted back-to-back major decision victories at 149 and 157 after P.J. Bory (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) defeated Chris Fronhofer 11-0 and Don Carlo-Clauss (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) defeated Justin Hoch 17-5, respectively. Leading 20-3, the Cavaliers’ Brian Muir (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) put the match away for Virginia by pinning the Bearcats’ Seneca Todd at 6:05 in the 165 lbs. bout to give UVa a 26-3 advantage.
Binghamton won the last three matches of the dual after Jeff McAveney posted a 15-6 major decision victory over Greg Francesca (Union, N.J./Blair Academy) at 174 lbs, Chris Karas defeated Scott Mania (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) 5-3 at 184 lbs. and Steve Lane topped Zach Freday (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) by the score of 3-3 (OTC) in the 197 lbs. match.
With the victory, Virginia improves to 2-0 in dual match action, while Binghamton falls to 0-1 with the loss.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Sunday, December 3rd when UVa competes in the Penn State Open in State College, Pa. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. and will run all day. Binghamton will return to action on Saturday, December 2nd when the Bearcats compete in the Campbell Duals. Competition is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
