CHARTLOTTESVILE, Va. – Virginia’s Kiamesha Otey (Quinton, Va. /New Kent)won two events to pace the Cavaliers in today’s New Year’s Invitational held at Virginia Tech. Otey won the 200-meter dash (24.99) and the long jump (19′ 1.5″) for her third and fourth wins of the season. Also victorious in the horizontal jumps for the Cavaliers was Naccole Guinn (Alexandria, Va. /Thomas Jefferson), who took top honors for the Cavaliers in the triple jump (41′ 3.25″). Otey also took second in the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.69.

Other winners for the Cavaliers included Eliese Mitchell (Narvon, Pa./Garden Spot) who took top honors in the 20-lb. weight throw (56′ 1″), Kim Turko (Edison, N.J. /John P. Stevens) in the 60-meter hurdles (8.92), and the 1600-meter relay team (3:55.14). Mitchell also placed third in the shot put (42′ 10.25″), while Turko’s victory in the hurdles led a 1-2-4-5-6 run for the Cavaliers, with Guinn taking second with a time of 9.01.

Micheline Diakite (Alexandria, Va. /T.C. Williams)took runner-up honors for the Cavaliers with a run of 2:22.96 in the 800 meters, while the distance medley team took third in a time of 3:55.14.

On the men’s side, Marion Mason (Ft. Belvoir, Va./Hayfield) ran an 8.01 to take second in the 60-meter hurdles, and Sam Jackson (Kingwood, Tx. /Kingwood)was also a runner-up, running the 3000 meters in a time of 8:41.57. Teammate Jeff Binggeli (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville) took third in the same race with a time of 8:42.46. McGavok Dunbar (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian)was also a third-place finisher for the Cavaliers, taking the bronze in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:55.63. The men’s 4×400 relay team was also a runner-up with a time of 3:19.13.
