Cavaliers in Third Place at ACC Indoor Track Championships

Blacksburg, Va. – The Cavaliers men’s and women’s track and field teams are in third place after the first day of competition at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, which are being held in Blacksburg, Va. Bobby Thiele (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville) finished third in the 5000-meter run to earn All-ACC honors, running a 14:32.11.

The Cavaliers also picked up two points from Matt Ruhl (Somerdale, N.J. /Triton Regional) in the 5K. Ruhl finished seventh with a time of 14:51.54. Virginia also picked up eight points in the shot put as Tim Bilmanis (Hughesville, Md. /Thomas Stone) took fourth with a toss of 15.38m (50′ 5.5″) and David O’Rourke (Freehold, NJ /Freehold Boro) took sixth with a 14.66 (48′ 1.25″). The Hoos also had multiple scorers in the long jump as Marion Mason (Ft. Belvoir, Va./Hayfield) placed sixth with a leap of 7.50m (24′ 7.25″) and Jarrett Hagwood (Martinsville,Va./Laurel) took eighth with a jump of 7.34m (24′ 1″).

The distance medley team took fifth, just edging the North Carolina Tar Heels by .03 seconds, running a time of 10:19.57, boosting the Cavaliers’ total to 24 points and a third place rank. On the DMR were Matt Antunes (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), Brandon Alexander (Alexandria, Va. /T.C. Williams), Justin Watson (Nokesville, Va./Brentsville Dist.), and Sam Jackson (Kingwood, Tx./Kingwood).

On the women’s side, the distance medley team of Jessica Thomas (Pt. Pleasant, N.J. (Pt. Pleasant Borough), Kim Turko (Edison, N.J. /John P. Stevens), Micheline Diakite (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams), and Dawn Cleary (Woodbridge, Va. /Woodbridge) took runner-up honors with a time of 11:50.59. Also taking runner-up honors was Kiamesha Otey (Quinton, Va. /New Kent), who jumped 6.13m (20′ 1.5″) in the long jump, an NCAA Provisional mark and a season best for Virginia.

Otey’s silver in the long jump led a 2-6-8 finish for Virginia, who was the only school to have three scorers in the event. Caroline Harvey (Mechanicsville, Va. /Atlee) finished sixth with a leap of 5.94m (19′ 6″) and Naccole Guinn (Alexandria, Va. /Thomas Jefferson) took eighth with a jump of 5.84m (19′ 2″). Curtrell Frye (Columbia, S.C. /Irmo) finished just out of scoring, leaping 5.74m (18′ 10″), good enough for ninth.

Also scoring for the Cavaliers was Annica White (Weston, Mass. /Weston), who took seventh in the high jump with a jump of 1.63m (5′ 4.25″) and sixth in the pole vault with a 3.60m (11′ 9.75). White’s pole vault set a new school record , breaking her own record that she set earlier this year. Eliese Mitchell (Narvon, Pa. /Garden Spot) also took points home for Virginia with a fourth-place finish in the shot put, throwing 14.02m (46′ 0″). Dana Coons’ (Vienna, Va. /James Madison) fifth-place finish in the 5000-meter run with a time of 17:09.22 also scored for Virginia.

The championships conclude tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 17.
