Wrestling Loses Close Contest

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia wrestling team lost by one point to the Clarion Golden Eagles in a dual match competition by the score of 19-18. Clarion jumped out to an early 16-0 lead, winning their first four matches, but Virginia came back to take five of the remaining six competitions. The loss leaves Virginia’s record at 6-8 for the season.
Clarion earned their first six points as Clarion’s Eric Mausser (Sharon, Pa.) pinned Cavalier Zach Freday (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) at 4:09 into the 197 pound bout. In the Heavyweight match, Clarion improved their lead to 10-0 as John Testa (Newark, Del.) came up with a major decision victory of 10-2 over UVa.’s Ryan Painter (Rainelle, W.Va./Rainelle). Virginia’s Ryan Stewart (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) then fell to Clarion’s Peter Derstine (Coral Springs, Fla.) in the 125 pound match by the score of 4-8, bringing Clarion’s lead to 13-0. At 133 pounds, Rad Martinez (West Jordan, Utah) added three more points to Clarion’s lead with a 7-4 victory over Virginia’s Joe Alexander (Franklin, N.J./Delsea Regional) making the team score to 16-0.
Jason Bernd (Virginia Beach, Va./Colonial) turned the tables for the Cavaliers as he posted UVa’s first win of the dual match in the 141 pound competion. His 7-6 victory over Clarion’s Frank Edgar (Tom’s River, N.J.) put Virginia on the scoreboard, 16-3.
At 149 pounds, Virginia’s P.J. Bory (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) edged out Clarion’s Dominic Surra (Kersey, Pa.) with an 8-7 victory, building the Cavaliers score to 16-6. Continuing the winning streak and bringing the team score to 16-9, Virginia’s Don Carlo-Clauss (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) defeated Clarion’s Shane McChesney in the 157 pound match by a score of 5-2. Clarion’s Pete Kroshefskie (Gordon, Pa.) forfieted to Virginia’s Greg Francesca (Union, N.J./Blair Academy) in the 165 pound match, closing the gap to 16-15.
At 174 pounds, Clarion’s Aaron Mitchell (DuBois, Pa.) came up with an overtime win of 3-1 against Virginia’s Brian Muir (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North), pushing Clarion ahead, 19-15. In the final match at 184 pounds, Virginia’s Jimi Massey (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) defeated Clarion’s Bob Topper (Hanover, Pa.) with a 3-2 victory, but Clarion took the dual match win edging out Virginia, 19-18.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday, March 3rd when UVa competes in the 2001 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C. The ACC Tournament is part of the 2001 Mat Jam, which also includes the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and the Southern Conference championships. The events will be held in Carmichael Auditorium.
