RALEIGH, N.C. – The Virginia softball team successfully opened its 2001 season with a 5-2 victory over Long Island Friday (February 16) in pool play of the Triangle Classic Softball Tournament at Walnut Creek Sports Complex. Third-year first baseman Kristen Dennis (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon) and fourth-year right fielder Meaghan Young (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) led the Cavaliers offensively, while first-year pitcher Jessica Edwards (Santa Ana, Calif./Orange Lutheran) allowed just two runs and four hits in earning her first collegiate victory.
Dennis was two for three in the contest with a home run, while Young was two for four. Edwards pitched five strong innings and allowed two runs (one earned) while striking out eight and walking four. Third-year Erin Allinder (Norco, Calif./Norco) earned her first save with two perfect innings of relief of Edwards.
Long Island scored both of its runs in the first inning and Dennis cut the deficit to 2-1 with a leadoff home run in the top of the second inning. Second-year third baseman Ruby Rojas (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single in the third inning. After a Dennis walk, second-year left fielder Johanna Kaiser (Scottsdale, Ariz./Saguaro) gave the Cavaliers the lead for good with a single that plated Young and Rojas. Young accounted for Virginia’s fifth run with a single that drove in first-year shortstop Heather Field (Lincoln, Calif./Lincoln) in the sixth inning.
