Keith Friel Finishes Second In Three-Point Basketball Championship

CHARLOTTESVILLE – University of Virginia guard Keith Friel finished second on Thursday (March 29) in the three-point competition at the 13th annual College Slam Dunk and Three-Point Basketball Championships in Saint Paul, Minn. The competition took place at the Gangelhoff Center at Concordia University-Saint Paul.
The 6-4 Friel, from Durham, N.H., lost 22-20 to Joe Crispin of Penn State in the championship round.
Eight players started the competition with four advancing to the second round and two to the championship round. Shaun Fein (Georgia Tech, 20 points), Dean Oliver (Iowa, 19 points), Friel (18 points) and Crispin (17 points) advanced to the second round. Ryan Mendez (Stanford, 12 points), Martin Inglesby (Notre Dame, 10 points), Quincy Wadley (Temple, 10 points) and Tony Harris (Tennessee, 7 points) failed to advance beyond the first round.
Friel had 21 points and Crispin 20 in the second round to advance to the championship round. Fein (19 points) and Oliver (13 points) failed to advance.
The event featured the men’s three-point competition, a women’s three-point competition, a slam dunk competition and a three-point shootout between the men’s and women’s champions. ESPN taped the event with Dick Vitale and Brad Nessler serving as hosts of the program that will air on Saturday (March 31) from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Eastern time.
Friel was a tri-captain of the 2000-01 Virginia team. He averaged 8.4 points a game and led the Cavaliers with 62 three-point field goals. During his two seasons at UVa after transferring from Notre Dame, Friel made 107 three-point field goals and ranks eighth on Virginia’s career three-point field goals list.
