Box Score

Charlottesville – Virginia’s Molly Cangemi (Timonium, Md./Notre Dame Prep) notched a hat trick and added an assist in the Cavaliers’ final four goals of the game, but the Hoos fell to the fourth-ranked Blue Devils 14-10. Duke (8-2) took an early 3-0 lead but the Cavaliers (7-5) battled back to cut the deficit to 6-4 at the break. Tiffany Schummer (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) led the Virginia defense with five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.

The Blue Devils jumped out 3-0 in the first 2:25 behind a pair of assists from Kate Kaiser. Virginia got on the board as Schummer picked up a Duke overthrow and started a transition that drew a shooting space foul. Caitlin Banks (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) converted the 8-meter to cut the deficit to 3-1. Duke went back up by three just over a minute later, but Schummer won the ensuing draw and the Cavaliers drew a foul in the arc that Jamie Haas (Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown) converted to pull back within two. Duke scored again for a three-goal margin two minutes later, but Jill Hansen (Killington, Vt./Woodstock) picked up a loose ball in the Cavalier defensive arc on the next possession and started a clear for Virginia. Haas drove to the crease, lost the ball, but got it back and drove in again for a goal to pull the Hoos within two again. Duke pushed the margin back to three just over a minute later, but Virginia answered back as Gina Sambus (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) was fouled in the arc off the ball and converted the center hash to pull Virginia within two at the break.

The Cavaliers pulled to 6-5 as Schummer caused a turnover and Virginia took the ball upfield where Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) drew a shooting space foul and scored, making the Cavaliers down by one with 27:34 to play. But the Blue Devils scored four goals in the next two minutes to take a five-goal lead with 22:51 to play. Lauren scored again on a crease feed from Mills Hook (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s) to stop the run, but Duke scored two more goals in a two minute span to move the margin up to six at 12-6 with 12:18 to go.

Cangemi then scored a pair of goals in two minutes as the Aumiller sisters won consecutive draws, sandwiching a Duke goal. Lacey (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) won the first one and got the ball to Cangemi who scored on the free position. Duke won the next draw and the Cavaliers made a defensive stand on the next possession, but failed to clear the ball and Kaiser ran in from the restraining line to push the margin back to five. Lauren won the next draw and got the ball behind the cage and lofted it to Cangemi, who shot over Foster for the goal, pulling the Cavaliers back to a five-goal deficit with 8:25 to play.

Haas won the next draw and got the ball to Cangemi, who fed in Hansen the arc. Courtney Muller (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown) caused a turnover and started a transition that Cangemi completed with a drive to the cage at 5:35, pulling Virginia back to within three at 13-10. Kaiser scored with 32 seconds on the clock on an empty net for the final margin of 14-10.

The Cavaliers return to action at home against in-state rival Virginia Tech on Tuesday, April 10. Game time against the Hokies is 7:00 pm.
