DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 49 University of Virginia men’s tennis team lost an Atlantic Coast Conference match to #3 Duke, 5-2, on Saturday (April 7) in Durham, N.C. Virginia lost the doubles point and four of six singles matches en route to the 5-2 loss. Virginia is now 9-5 overall and 2-4 in the ACC, while Duke is 16-3, 7-0 in the ACC.

The Cavaliers came within one game of winning the doubles point , but the fourth-year duo of Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./ The Lovett School) and Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./ Chapel Hill) lost just their sixth doubles match of the year, 9-8, to Duke’s Philip King and Ramsey Smith. UVa’s Tommy Croker (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens) and Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) won their doubles match, 9-8, over Marko Cerenko and Michael Yani. Vahaly and Montgomery could not pull out their second win over a ranked team this week, however, and the Cavaliers dropped the doubles point.

In singles, both Vahaly and Montgomery won, but the rest of the Virginia lineup lost. Vahaly, the nation’s 12th-ranked player, continued his two-year undefeated streak in ACC singles matches by defeating #14 King, 7-6, 6-1, while unranked Montgomery beat #16 Smith from Duke, 6-4, 6-4.

Virginia returns to action Sunday (April 8) when the Cavaliers travel to Raleigh, N.C. to face another ACC rival, N.C. State. That match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
