UVa's Rojas Named ACC And SASA Softball Player Of The Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Virginia second-year third baseman Ruby Rojas (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) has been named both the Atlantic Coast Conference and Southern Atlantic Softball Alliance Player of the Week as announced Monday (April 9). Rojas helped lead the Cavalier softball squad to a 6-2 week and a second-place finish in the Lady Vol Spring Invitational, held April 6-8.

Rojas, who is on a nine-game hitting streak, had at least one hit in all eight games this past week for Virginia and batted .500 or better six times. Rojas hit an impressive .565 (13-23) in eight games and raised her batting average 41 points from .330 to .371. Among Rojas’ 13 hits were two doubles and a home run. She drove in nine runs, scored seven times and was also five for five in stolen base attempts.

Rojas began the week with four hits and five RBI in Virginia’s doubleheader sweep over George Mason on April 3. In the three-day Lady Vol Spring Invitational, Rojas hit .562 (9-16) in helping the Cavaliers compile a 4-2 record.

Rojas is second on the team with her .371 (49-132) batting average this season. Rojas is also second on the team in home runs with a career-best five, as well as slugging percentage (.530), on-base percentage (.468) and stolen bases (14). Rojas leads the Cavaliers with 40 runs, which ties the school record for runs scored in a single season.

The Cavaliers are currently 37-11 on the season. UVa is 0-1 in ACC play and 1-1 in the SASA.
