Virginia Men's Tennis Team Defeats Liberty, 5-2

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The No. 41 University of Virginia men’s tennis team recorded a 5-2 win over in-state rival Liberty on Thursday (April 12) at the Esbenshade-Hershey tennis complex in Lynchburg, Va. The Cavaliers won all three doubles matches and four of six singles matches to capture their 12th victory of the season. Virginia, which finished with a 4-4 record in the Atlantic Coast Conference, is now 12-5 overall. Liberty is 9-9 overall and finished its Big South Conference season with a 3-4 mark.
UVa fourth-years Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) and Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) captured their 27th win of the season by defeating Bruno Coelho and Ricardo Shinozaki, 8-2. Second-year Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) and fourth-year Brian Hunter (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) won at No. 2 doubles. Meanwhile, first-year Preston Walters (Atherton, Calif./The Menlo School) and second-year Peter Cownie (Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling) took advantage of their first appearance in a dual match, registering an 8-1 win at No. 3.
In singles, Vahaly and Montgomery won in their usual spots at No. 1 and No. 2. Duquette, who is regular in the rotation at No. 4, played at No. 3, while Hunter, Gregory Alpert (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) rounded out the line-up for UVa. Duquette and Hunter won their matches in straight sets, while both Alpert and Guarnieri lost.
Virginia returns to action on Saturday (April 14) when the Cavaliers host Virginia Tech in their final home match of the season. The match will mark the final regular-season home contest in the careers of seniors Vahaly, Montgomery, Hunter and Tommy Croker (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens). The match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. at Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville.
