CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 41 University of Virginia men’s tennis team lost its last regular season home match of the 2001 season to #69 Virginia Tech on Saturday (April 14) at Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville. The match marked the final regular season home contest in the careers of four Virginia seniors, Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./ The Lovett School), Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./ Chapel Hill), Tommy Croker (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens) and Brian Hunter (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill).

UVa took an early 3-1 lead after winning the doubles point and winning singles matches at No. and No. 2. In doubles, Vahaly and Montgomery ran their team-best doubles record to 28-6, while Croker and second-year Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) grabbed an 8-4 victory over Andreas Laulund and Andrew Vu at No. 2.

Vahaly and Montgomery went on to win their singles matches in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Croker lost at No. 3, so with four matches remaining on the court, Virginia needed just one victory to clinch the match. The Hokies responded, however, by winning at No. 4, and then capturing three-set wins at No. 5 and No. 6 to grab the 4-3 victory.

UVa (12-6 overall, 4-4 in the ACC) returns to action on Monday (April 16) when the Cavs travel to James Madison for their final regular season match. Virginia will then head to Orlando, Fla. to play in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships from Thursday through Sunday (April 19-22).
