Womack And Spinner Highlight UVA's Final Football Scrimmage

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Tailback Antwoine Womack carried the ball 14 times for 91 yards and three touchdowns, and quarterback Bryson Spinner threw two touchdown passes to highlight the final scrimmage of the 2001 spring practice period at the University of Virginia. The scrimmage was held at UVa’s Kl?ckner Stadium.

Womack scored twice on runs of one yard and also scored on a two-yard run. Tailback Marquis Weeks rushed for 50 yards on 13 carries and scored one touchdown on a six-yard run.

Spinner completed 11 of 18 passes for 125 yards. He threw touchdown passes of 39-yards to wide receiver Michael McGrew and 13 yards to wide receiver Ryan Sawyer. McGrew caught four passes for 58 yards and one touchdown, and wide receiver Billy McMullen caught three passes for 50 yards.

Linebacker Angelo Crowell and defensive back Chris Williams each were in on seven tackles to lead the defensive effort. Crowell had a tackle for a four-yard loss and Williams broke up two passes.

Defensive backs Jerton Evans and Rashad Roberson intercepted passes, and defensive back Almondo “Muffin” Curry and linebacker Merrill Robertson recovered fumbles.

McMullen and linebacker Raymond Mann received the Rock Weir Most Improved Player Awards for the spring practice period.

“It was the final scrimmage of spring practice although with the people there it creates a little different atmosphere for the players,” head coach Al Groh said. “We worked on the things I wanted to work on today in lieu of being able to play a game. We were just a couple of players short of being able to divide up and do that competitively, but I thought we had pretty good competition.”

Virginia opens its 2001 season on August 25 at the University of Wisconsin in the Eddie Robinson Classic. The Cavaliers’ first home game of the season will be on September 1 against the University of Richmond.
