Box Score

Virginia’s Lauri Kenis (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) blocked a Loyola pass with less than 30 seconds to play in the game, preventing a Greyhound fast break and helping the Cavaliers (10-6) hold on for an 8-7 upset of the Hounds. Liz McCarthy (Garden City, N.Y./Taft) made 15 saves in the game, her highest total this season, to bolster the strong Virginia defensive effort. Virginia held the Hounds to two goals in the first half and then scored five goals in the first ten minutes of the second, including three from the crosse of Jamie Haas (Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown), to take a commanding 8-4 lead.

The Cavaliers jumped out on top behind three saves from McCarthy on the Greyhounds’ first three shots. After Loyola took the first shot of the game, the Cavaliers worked the ball downfield where Haas drew a shooting space foul and converted it for a 1-0 Cavalier lead. Virginia went up 2-0 just over a minute later as McCarthy made another point-blank save and the Cavalier transition worked the ball to the offense where Haas fed Mills Hook (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s) on the crease and Hook converted with 20:21 to play. The Greyhounds scored four minutes later to cut the deficit in half.

The teams went scoreless for the next 11 minutes as McCarthy made two of her eight first-half saves in that time. Loyola was able to tie the game with 5:42 to play in the half on an 8-meter shot, but Virginia went up 3-2 three minutes later as Hook dumped the ball to Lacey Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) in the arc, who scored on the post to give Virginia the lead they would not relinquish. Virginia held the ball in the final 30 seconds of the first half but a turnover gave the ball back to the Hounds, who raced downfield and got off a shot as time expired, but McCarthy was up to the task, turning it away to preserve the 3-2 lead at the break.

Virginia exploded offensively in the first two minutes of play of the second half. Caitlin Banks (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) controlled the opening draw and batted it to Molly Cangemi (Timonium, Md./Notre Dame Prep) who took to the cage and forced a shooting space foul. On the reset, Cangemi found Hook on the crease on the far side of the arc for the easy put-in just 38 seconds into the half. The Cavaliers won the second draw and worked the ball downfield where Hook fed Haas in the arc off a stack, putting Virginia up 5-2 just 1:36 into the second half. Loyola answered with a goal two minutes later to pull within two again.

The two teams then scored three goals in a 52-second span, as Jamie Haas sandwiched a Greyhound goal with two of her own to push the margin back to three. She scored the first on a scramble in front of the cage. Loyola won the draw and scored on that possession, but Banks won the next draw and threw an outlet to Hook, who fed a streaking Haas, who scored to put Virginia up 7-4 and forcing the Hounds to call a timeout.

Virginia scored their eighth goal after the Hounds had a goal called back for a crease violation. The Cavaliers worked the ball upfield where Banks dumped the ball to Hook in the arc, giving Virginia an 8-4 lead with 19:37 to play.

Loyola scored a pair of goals 1:06 apart to pull within two with 14:29 to play, but the stellar play of McCarthy shut the door after that as she made three saves to preserve the lead. Loyola finally cut the deficit to one with 32 seconds left to play as Megan Santacroce batted in a loose ball off a McCarthy save, giving the Hounds a chance to tie the game. On the ensuing draw, a Cavalier foul gave Stacey Morlang possession in the center circle. Morlang’s long outlet pass to Testrake was battled down by Kenis, who scooped it up and the Cavaliers retained possession to preserve the win.

Virginia returns to action on Sunday, April 29 as the Cavaliers host Vanderbilt. Game time against the Commodores is 1:00 pm.
