FAIRFAX, Va.– Junior Brian Anderson set a career high with five runs batted in and sparked George Mason to 10 unanswered runs as the Patriots defeated Virginia, 10-5, in a non-conference college baseball game Wednesday afternoon at Raymond H. “Hap” Spuhler Field.

George Mason snapped a three-game losing streak as it improved to 18-26, while Virginia lost its second straight game to fall to 23-23.

The Cavaliers got off to a strong start by scoring a run in the second inning and four in the fourth for a 5-0 lead. Senior Mark Rueffert and junior Dan Street hit back-to-back doubles for a 1-0 Virginia lead in the second, and Street highlighted the fourth with a three-run home run, his eighth of the year.

But George Mason rallied by scoring five runs in its half of the fourth inning to tie the score at 5-5, then the Patriots added three runs in the fifth and one each in the sixth and seventh innings. Anderson hit a three-run home run, his fourth, to get the Patriots on the scoreboard in the fourth, and junior Adam Shorts drove in the tying run with a single. Anderson put George Mason ahead with a run-scoring single in the fifth before junior Robbie Robertson hit a two-run home run, his third, for an 8-5 advantage. Anderson drove in another run with a single in the sixth and freshman Jeff Palumbo brought home the final run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Anderson led the Patriots with three hits, while Robertson and senior Scott Yeager each had two hits. Sophomore Chris Murray (1-4) allowed seven hits over 6 1/3 innings to earn his first victory of the season, and junior Jim Bolszio allowed just one hit and struck out two over the final 2 2/3 innings for his first save.

Street led Virginia with two hits and four RBI. Freshman Christopher Gale (0-2), the second of four Cavaliers pitchers, took the loss.
