CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 42nd-ranked University of Virginia Women’s tennis team will participate in the 2001 NCAA Team Tennis Tournament, the NCAA announced Thursday (May 3, 2001). The Cavaliers, who are making their first appearance in the tournament since 1998, will play No. 24 Kentucky in the first round of the tournament at Northwestern in Chicago. The match will take place on Friday, May 12. The time of the match has not yet been determined.

Virginia finished its regular season 15-10 and 3-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Cavaliers advanced to the semifinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament for the first time since 1993 after a 4-3 upset win over No. 17 North Carolina in the quarterfinals. UVa fell to Wake Forest, 4-1, in the semifinal match.

The Cavaliers are in the same bracket as seventh-seeded Northwestern and the University of Illinois-Chicago. The winners of the first round matches will play on Saturday , May 13, also at Northwestern.

Virginia is joined by ACC rivals North Carolina, Duke, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech and Florida State. Stanford is the No. 1 seed.
