CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – University of Virginia women’s basketball head coach Debbie Ryan announced today that Yeliz (Liz) Sahin has joined the Cavaliers after transferring from Palm Beach Community College. Sahin, a 5-7 guard from Hatay, Turkey, is one of seven newcomers on the Virginia basketball team. Virginia signed LaTonya Blue, Jocelyn Logan-Friend, Bethany LeSueur, Lynette O’Reggio, and Brandi Teamer this fall and added transfer Cherrise Graham this spring.

Sahin averaged 15 points, eight assists, and five steals per game at Palm Beach Community College. The 5-7 guard shot 46 percent from the field and was third in the state in free throw percentage, connecting on 80 percent of her attempts from the line. Sahin led the state of Florida in assists and was named to the All-State squad following the 2000-01 season.

In her first season at Palm Beach, she was named the Southern Conference Player of the Year. Sahin helped lead Palm Beach to a perfect 12-0 league record a year ago. She was also named to the All-Academic Team twice. The native of Hatay, Turkey was a member of the National Basketball Team before moving to Florida in 1998.

Virginia finished the 2000-01 season with an 18-14 record and received its 18th consecutive berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers were eliminated from the tournament after an 81-71 overtime loss to the University of Michigan in the first round.
