CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia rising second-year volleyball player Katie Synan (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) is one of 12 players selected to participate in a second round of tryouts for the 2001 USA Volleyball Women’s Junior National Team. The tryouts will be conducted May 25-28 at Penn State University in State College, Pa. There are currently 12 players on the Junior National team and six of the 12 athletes competing in the second round of tryouts will be added to the 18-player roster. Synan originally tried out for the Junior National Volleyball team on April 12 at the Northeast Qualifier in Baltimore, Md.

Synan, a 6-2 outside hitter, was hampered by injuries during her first collegiate season. In 2000, Synan registered 109 kills, 43 blocks, 38 digs and 26 set assists. She appeared in 26 of the Cavaliers’ 31 matches and in a total of 76 games. Synan tallied career-bests of 14 kills, a .379 hitting percentage, and seven digs in UVa’s 3-2 win over Liberty on October 10.

Virginia finished the 2001 season with a 16-15 overall record and an 8-8 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
